Thomaston girls seize first place with home win over Nonnewaug

A quick start and a strong effort from the foul line (17 of 22) propelled the Thomaston girls basketball team to a 49-45 win over Nonnewaug at Thomaston High School on Friday night.
Thomaston (12-3, 12-1 BL) took over sole possession of first place in the BL with the victory. Nonnewaug fell to 13-2 (11-2 BL).
The Golden Bears jumped out to a 16-5 lead after one quarter of play, but the Chiefs rallied to take a 32-29 on Caitlin Drakeley's three-point play with 7:11 to go in the fourth quarter. Drakeley led all scorers with 22 points. Katie Burke added 11 for the Chiefs, but spent much of the game on the bench in foul trouble.
Thomaston rallied to take the lead, then sealed the game from the foul line. The Bears hit 13 of 16 free throw attempts in the fourth quarter. Abby Hurlbert (team-high 16 points) made all six of her attempts from the line in the final quarter. Kellie Burns and Laura Miller each scored 10 points while Maggie Eberhardt added eight.
